A few years ago HM Revenue & Customs rolled out a new computer system that was able to link taxpayer records more effectively. This gave them the capability of reviewing a taxpayer’s tax liability with relative ease.

On the back of this Mr X came to us for help. He had just received tax calculations for the tax years 2007/8, 2008/9 and 2009/10 out of the blue with a demand for in excess of £4,000.

Mr X, a pensioner from Bagshot, had thought his tax affairs were all in order and could not understand how this position had come about.

The benefit
We checked the assessments, understood the position, met with Mr X several times and were able to use an extra statutory concession to get rid of the bulk of the liability. The remaining liability was then spread over three years and collected by way of a PAYE tax code adjustment. Therefore we satisfactorily managed to ease the position for our client.

Cost
When we took on the case we were not sure of success. We agreed a relatively nominal fee to establish that HMRC’s tax calculations were correct. We then agreed a further fee based on 10% plus VAT of the savings achieved.
